A Work Environment Inspired by the Spirit of the Forest
When the office renewal of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation (Metsäteollisuus ry) was completed, the entire work community immediately noticed the change in their everyday life. Previously closed and fragmented spaces were transformed into an open, inviting work environment that supports a sense of community and encourages encounters.
From Workspaces to Shared Spaces
The renewal was carried out on the main working floor, where around 37 people work. Before the renovation, both wings of the floor were separated by a row of windowless rooms that created narrow corridors and a maze-like atmosphere. These also blocked natural light from entering the building.
“The previous spaces were small and box-like, and some were practically used as storage. We wished for more openness and above all, shared areas where people could meet naturally during the day,” says Anne Hela-Ellonen, Administrative Director at the Finnish Forest Industries Federation.
The goal of the design agency KOKO3 was to transform the layout and atmosphere of the spaces to meet these wishes and to support today’s ways of working. One of the key changes was a completely new break area, which quickly became a shared and much-loved meeting place for the entire community.
“When the central area was opened up, it brought more spaciousness, light and areas where it’s easier to meet colleagues and work together. At the same time, we were able to utilize the entire floor much more efficiently,” says Helka Parkkinen, Creative Director and founder of KOKO3.
The Forest and Finnish Identity at the Core of Design
The design was inspired by Finnishness and the forest, whose colors, materials and calming atmosphere formed the basis for the new look of the spaces.
“We wanted to create an ensemble that both looks and feels like the Finnish Forest Industries Federation. We used different shades of green and various types of wood, and Finnish nature is visible in the glass wall graphics. As a contrast, brighter green adds liveliness and rhythm to the softer color palette,” describes interior designer Sofia Tuovinen.
Finnish expertise is visible in the furniture, materials, and overall atmosphere. At the same time, it was important to ensure that the art displayed in the office has enough space and air around it, allowing it to become a natural part of the whole.
“The renewal reflects the identity of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation. It highlights Finnish origin, responsibility and community spirit, while also supporting the needs of a modern working environment. The result is a warm and inviting space where the spirit of the forest and the Finnish Forest Industries Federation can truly be felt,” summarizes Helka Parkkinen.
Light, Warmth and Joy at Work
The relatively low ceiling and closed rooms made the original office rather dim, but through the renewal, this challenge was turned into a strength.
“The significant increase in natural light is perhaps the single most important change. The spaciousness and light bring energy and joy into the environment,” Tuovinen explains.
According to Anne Hela-Ellonen, the renewal has brought brightness and openness to the spaces while strengthening the sense of community.
“It’s wonderful to see how the new spaces have encouraged collaboration and spontaneous interaction. The environment now supports joy at work and togetherness in a completely new way.”
