A modern sawmill and functional workspaces supporting daily operations at Koskisen Oyj
Koskisen Oyj’s new sawmill represents the future of modern sawmill technology, where production is largely automated and the focus of work has shifted from physical labor to process supervision. The company employs approximately 1,000 people, with around 150 working in sawmill operations. At the new site, work shifts have been optimized and ergonomics have been brought to the forefront.
Comfortable workspaces designed with users in mind
“In designing the sawmill, the goal was to create functional and pleasant spaces for both production staff and supervisors. In collaboration with ISKU, we furnished the offices, break areas, and control room. The furniture solutions emphasized ergonomics, electronic adjustability, and ease of maintenance. In the break areas especially, we selected antimicrobial and wood-surfaced materials to withstand the demands of daily use,” says Lassi Santala, Director of Production at Koskisen.
The control room serves as the heart of the sawmill’s operations. Operators were involved in the design process from the very beginning, with the goal of creating a workstation that enables balanced workload distribution. Today, operators work in a semicircular setup that allows focus on different process areas, such as infeed and sawing.
Smooth collaboration and practical solutions
ISKU’s modular furniture and 3D modeling tools supported a user-oriented design process. The end result is a space that genuinely meets employee needs and improves everyday efficiency.
“Collaboration with ISKU was close and seamless. The planning took place partly at ISKU’s showroom and partly on-site at Koskisen. We developed new ergonomic solutions rather than repeating old ones. Clear documentation also supported the installation phase, even when small challenges arose along the way, they were resolved smoothly,” Lassi explains.
The partnership between Koskisen and ISKU is built on a shared vision: workspaces should support well-being and make work more meaningful. The result is a set of modern, user-driven solutions that enhance both productivity and day-to-day comfort.
